Surveillance cameras are an important security component to ensure the safety of your property. In fact, security cameras are one of the most critical elements when it comes to developing a proper security plan for your business. Infrared cameras offer added benefits to your existing surveillance systems and here’s how they can work for you:
Infrared Security Cameras: How Do They Work?
Most of us have seen infrared cameras being used in Hollywood blockbusters, such as “Mission Impossible” and “James Bond: Spectre.” Surprisingly, modern infrared cameras are not far from those made popular by Tom Cruise and Daniel Craig and are a little more grounded in security reality.
Infrared cameras use thermal imaging technology, which allows specially designed cameras to pick up on the heat radiating from different objects and people. Human body temperature usually reads around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, which typically greatly differs from other objects within the surrounding area. When a thermal infrared camera detects infrared energy, it converts such data into an electronic signal, which is then processed to produce a thermal image and perform temperature calculations. What normally would be invisible to the eye, in the manner of heat and how it is distributed, is now visible through the use of thermal infrared images.
Can Infrared Cameras Be Used in Broad Daylight?
As mentioned, infrared security cameras detect infrared energy, or heat, in order to produce an image. How much or how little light is available makes no real difference on whether or not an infrared security camera will be able to produce a proper image. This is one of the perks to an infrared camera, as it will continuously be able to provide added security, even in low light conditions.
However, it should be noted that sunlight produces both light and heat which can alter images from infrared security cameras that are located outside a building. Depending on the camera’s location, these are things to consider and ask a certified specialist to help when drafting a security and/or surveillance plan. Meanwhile, infrared security cameras should have little to no alteration as most buildings maintain a steady temperature throughout the year.
Day/Night Security Cameras + Infrared Security Cameras = Unbeatable Protection
While both types of security cameras produce results, they both work in different ways and make up different methods of security. While standard security cameras are important, infrared security cameras can offer an added layer of protection, making it easy for security teams to assess threats and making it tough on criminals and would-be intruders. At times, the cost of an infrared security camera is only a fraction in comparison to the inventory within a commercial building.
